Sarah Saturday is an accomplished musician, web designer, and Warped Tour veteran, but most notably she’s the founder of the Earn It Yourself movement. As staunch believers in the DIY ethos, we’ve followed the evolution of EIY and were psyched to finally catch up with Sarah to talk about the project. Earn It Yourself, or EIY, is an ethical ideology used by Saturday in her work with alternative and DIY musicians throughout the country, to encourage these aspiring artists to develop communal roots and to “do the right thing” in regards to their motives and business practices. Since its inception in 2006, EIY has evolved from an online forum and resource to a full blown movement that includes workshops at Warped Tour and a number of local EIY chapters across the country.

Today is the day to get out and support your local independent record store! Go buy music from your favorite artists at your nearest brick and mortar shop and help keep underground music (and the people who promote it) alive and well. The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, and was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally.

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April.

California Adventure 2012, Part Two: The Desert

Left LA to move to the desert yesterday. This is the house (or should I say, mansion?) that will be “home” for the next few weeks while I work for my friend at the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals. This is my third year working this gig, and although I would love to be on the other side of it (performing), I am super grateful that I get to spend a month in the beautiful California desert, living in a gorgeous house, working really hard to help put on some great music festivals with a bunch of my friends from the music production world. Not to mention that I get to see Radiohead twice in the same month this year, in a giant field under the desert sky at night. Um… YEAH.

sooooo……this came in the mail today and I jammed it in the office stereo right away!! Thank you SO SO much to Sarah Saturday / Gardening, Not Architecture for taking the time to HAND MAKE an album. The stitching on the side of the packaging…the stapled booklet with the handwritten and numbered intro page…it’s perfection. Knowing that she put it together herself makes it that much more special.

Everyone should do me a favor and check out the GNA blog and listen the sarah’s new “Florida Sessions”, recorded recently and available (for listening in FULL!) on her bandcamp page. I’m not linking you to that cause you should go to her blog and find it yourself.
